PHANTOMS AND HORSES

WHALE GHOSTS

The Silver Disks that dart an dance
Through our
shimmering sapphire Sky
Are not
spaceships but the laughing Ghosts
Of
Whales that swim on high!

Freed from their
prison of Whale-Flesh
The Sky becomes their Ocean bright
Instead of
plankton in their mouths
They eat the
sun ray's golden Light.

Human Ghosts tread near the Eart
In Mock of how their bodies trod.
But Whales were never bound to
Eart
So when they die they do not plod!

They rip the
Star flung Sky apart!
They breach above the Clouds in mirth
And shriek a song of victory
Over the Ways of heavy
Earth!

They graze among the
Worlds and Stars
Evolving higher gentle Pod!
Until at last their Deep Wet Souls
Intertwine with God.

THE GHOSTS OF WILD PONIES

I went West of Missouri
The mighty Missouri
Turbulent without
And peaceful within.

To the land of the Rockies
The weathered wild Rockies
Heard the Ghosts of Wild Ponies
Sing in the Wind.

Sun shining through dust
Made unbrushed coats of gold
Their Hoo-ves were of rocks
So ancient and old

Their tails were of diamonds
Their manes like a
FIRE
Untouched and untamed and
Unfenced in by wire

They snorted and galloped
And threw up more dust
And ran by unheeded till
Sunset was dusk

But they were only ghosts
Much to wild to mourn
That their live counterparts
From the
Canyons are gone

PHANTOM OF THE DUNES

High on the bluffs on a silvery night
There came to the Tors a peculiar sight
As over the Dunes the
Moon did ride
And the Winds played the reeds of the riverside!

The winds round the
Rocks did wildly mourn!

The Sands and the Winds and the Moon did form
Into the shape of a
Pale White Horse
Galloping galloping on!

I
ts hooves were black as the twisted rocks!
The
Moonlight shone on Moonlight locks
It whinnied a cry like the
howling Winds!
Galloping galloping on!

It galloped till the
Morning came
Then the Dunes were just the same
As they had been the day before
The
salt reeds sang to the Ocean's roar!

The Sands lay quiet washed anew
Sparkling in the
Morning's Dew
The hooves were but a rocky Tor
And the Beach was calm as it was before!

The only sight of Living things
Was the flash of the
Seagull's wings
And their loud and laughing cry
And last night's
Wind's dying sigh.

But never go out on the
Dunes at Night!
When the
Tors are dark; for the Sea glows bright
From the old
Moon's rays, then the Wild wind mourns,
The Sands are stirred, and the
Phantom forms!!

The Taming of Tempest
(For Stephanie)

Out of the desolate tors he came
Snorting breath and windy mane
Pounding hooves and blazing eyes
Tempest was his name!

No one could tame him
None did try
Or even catch his fiery eye:

As wild as the winds
As wild as the rain
As wild as the uncaught skies of Mars!

As wild as a raging flame!

Then came a girl with golden hair
A gentle voice and a heart of care
Her words were soothing to his ears
She soothed his nerves
She calmed his fears.

He bowed to her
And became her own
And over the rocks and the dunes they'd roam

Over the land
And over the field
Over the mountains high;
The misty girl with the golden hair
And the horse with the blazing eye.
