STUFF THAT DOESN'T FIT

 ANYWHERE ELSE

To the Neanderthal Whose Grave

was found bedecked with Flowers

You were young and happy way back then

Powered with life when all the Earth was new!

In joy you ran and hugged the rain washed morn

Danced delighted where the mountain wild  flowers grew!

You gave your tribe such unspoken joy!

  You laughed at winds and   leapt at  butterflies

They must have questioned all their beliefs

That such as you would sicken, fall and die!

Yet sad as that they sensed man's coming faith

How longing causes love's eternalling powers

     They sung no hymns but showed their faith

The only way they could

 They spoke wit flowers!

If all  Neanderthal should have a grave

Or monument to what they were!

I we should honor those we superseded

In what was surely evolution's cruelest hour!

Then let it show these Able brothers

Though clubbed to death by Cain

Knew all of Human feelings,

 all the pleasure, all the pain.

Not savages! not brutish beasts were they!

Human as ourselves with Human  Powers!

  That we should learn the truth in such a way!

Silent awesome statements taught by  flowers!

THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS AN ELEPHANT

Those six blind men with the single want;
Who wanted to "see" an Elephant
Were lead by their guiders up to see.
Each a different part so they couldn't agree:
Did on one thing; those sightless six:
At least all knew He did exist!

Pity us more blind man seven;
Who also longed for a sense of Heaven;
He wanted to "see" that Elephant too;
And managed to grope his way to the zoo:
But he had no friend to guide his hands
And so tall the Elephant stands;
Alas he passed right under It
Without sensing that Being one bit!

So with bitterness he fought the six!
"I touched nothing that did exist!
It's only a phantom beast you want
There's no such thing as an Elephant

EASTER ISLAND

Wind swept land of rolling hills
Rocky, barren, without frills:
But oh my isle I love thee so
and the roaring sea side below.

Statues of an ancient race
stand as guardians in their place
And in the twilight seem to be
Much more alive than modern me.

The timeless chants of natives sound,
Spooky ‘gainst the hallowed ground
And weave a spell of ancientness
Of wilder times the isle possessed;

Of boats of balsa wove with reeds
And coconuts and wild gourd seeds
Of hunts for sharks just past the shore
For crab, for pike, and so much more!

The stars are out. The time is late.
No more call sea birds to mate.
I pause only moments more
To listen to that old  sea roar

And long shall I remember this
and of this isle I only wish
That time had not been mean to thee
And you'd been changeless as the sea.

DEFEATED BY ANCIENT MAN

The CAVE was black in the endless gloom
A place beyond all light!
Deep and dark as the Middle Earths
Ten times much more than
night!

The stalactites hung like gleaming teeth
Of a monster long extinct;
The
water dropped with a silvery tone
Of an echoing long
deep plink.

The walls where my flashlight shone on them
Were the hues of paradis
I dropped a
rock far over the edge
And it bounded once, then twice.

It stretched out far to infinity
Like the
throat of a monstrous whale!
And when I called it echoed far
With the sound of a
ghostly wail!

I was glad I knew my way out from
This CAVE like the
UNDERWORLD
Else I step wrong on the
slippery rocks
And to
far depths be hurled!

And the bones of bear and wolf and ca
Testified right well
To the fact that others hadn't known;
And to their deaths they fell.

I

 thought I was the only one
To know of this retreat.
With no other signs of Man about
The Silence hugged me sweet!

But then I turned a corner sharp
And there in the ghostly light;
Painted so real I first thought they were
So they gave me quite a fright!

Mammoth Cave Paintings

Were
mammoths big with their ivory tusks
Gleaming in the light
Running forever across the walls
Of a long and endless night!

And Bisons real as the orbiting moon
As from
snarling Dogs they ran
But they weren't going fast to safety soon
For their makers had been
Man!

How thrilled I was to find them there!
Yet I almost uttered a curse:
It seems there's no place left on
Eart
That you can discover, first!

TWO LONELY ALIENS

Mork may be the flip
Side of
Spock, but they are both
Playing the same tune.

MINDY'S POEM

Be comforted my Restless One;
My Cain from beyond the
silver Moon!
My great
Star Prince, my frightened Child!
Our land gives Peace, you'll feel it soon.

For there are
Wild  Flowers on the hill
And the M
ountains THUNDER at the Dawn!
And the
Thrush sings lovingly Be still!
As it soars to greet the
Rising Morn

As sure as
God there will come a time
When
Machines and Space seem far away
Your hand in mine; our Future One
We'll run together up the
rosy hills to play!

ZENOBIA

A True Story

Zenobia was a Princess
Daughter of a Sheik!
Wild as the shifting sands
And strong as she was sleek!

Zenobia was a rider
Such again there's never been
She'd ride her racing white camel
Faster than the wind!

When she was grown she married a
Prince
A
Bedouin she was then
By his side
she flashed her sword;
They'd share the lands they'd win.

Soon the
silver Moon looked down on Joy
And
loud Arabian song
For their riches grew as their
Kingdom grew
So proud! So tall! So strong!

They had a city like a dream;
A
fortress like a home
With
rugs and spices, and things so rare
It reached the ears of
Rome!

Only
Rome could have those things!
Only
Caesar such a trove!
So he sent a
thundering troop
Against Zenobia they strove!

The first attack was small and young
And easy to repel:
Her sword flashed cold, her camel charged;
A thousand bodies fell.

A thousand men stained red those sands
In but a single night;
For the troops of
Zenobia were fierce and strong
And the Bedouins won that fight!

So
mad Caesar tried again!
TEN THOUSAND TROOPS WERE SENT!
Across the shimmering BURNING sands!
Soon
Zenobia's power was rent!

Soon all the
riches of a Sheik!
All the
riches fair!
All the
curtains! All the gold!
All the
incense in the air!

All was fallen! Fallen! FALLEN!
To the dust and to the sands!
What was once the richest city
Now was only
barren lands!

Oh
Rome was POWER and Rome was GREED
They'd never allow defeat!
Soon only
Zenobia remained uncaught
To make their take complete.

Zenobia upon her camel raced
Away across the sands
Five days and nights without stopping
Over the HOWLING empty lands!

With the
gleaming Nile in sight
And a boat upon the banks;
She spurred her
heaving camel on
With blows across its flanks!

It seemed at last though tired she was
That she would win the chase;
But the owner of the boat was slow...
So the
Romans won the race!

The Ghost of Zenobia now rides
Over the wild and windy sands!
Over the fallen temple tombs!
Over the sad and sobbing lands!

THUNDERING across those shimmering ruins
Those ruins that were her home!
Calling calling for an army!
CALLING FOR AN ARMY!
To fight against
proud Rome!

WON-BATTLE LOST

The ancient warrior lay on his bed and shivered
As the ghosts of
long killed enemies
Returned to haunt him
And the throw from a spear-long-turned-to-dust
Finally killed him.

I PITY YOU FUTURE

Oh Future you cannot know OUR loneliness;
Ours is different from your own:
YOURS has other
Life forms in it.
WE are alone.

But Future how I pity you!
For your plight's so different from our own:
OUR
Universe has friends and magic monsters in it.
YOUR
Universe is known!

We can Dream and Wonder New
But YOU know your fate!
Would we have tried so very hard for you
If REALITY had been the bait?

Would WE have tried so very hard to find
That Life is not so alien as it seems?
Your adventure's only politics
WE had our DREAMS!

ODE TO THE CONQUERORS

I say to you
You ARE gods!
Never-the-less you shall
fall to the dust like Kings
And die like any prince.
You will rot in your tombs
Surrounded by gold
And the Sands of the Ages
Will cover you.
You will not be discovered
Or called to Mind.
Even the Archaeologists will fail you.

As with you
So with
Napoleon and Hitler
Lenin and Stalin
Will go their way..
And lie down in the dust beside you.

All the great and glorious of the Nations
Will be with you for company
And man will go on;
And forget still more
All the great prides of all the Nations
Are soon forgotten.

We will rise to the
Stars and leave you all behind.
And Rome and Egypt will be but names in the
Wind...
And the
Green World will orbit still
around itself
And whirl about its
Star the Sun
unstopped
Unchecked
Till all the ages pass...
The
Sun will ride the Galaxies wheel
In company with zillions:
And you will be forgotten
Yes proud Conquerors
Utterly forgotten.

BALLAD OF A TENACIOUS SMOKER
A True Story

On a dark and snowy night
Owen Knox needed a light

But there wasn't a single butt to be found
In pocket, tray, machine, or ground.

He even searched the wastebasket with all his might
But no devil came to aid his plight.

Silly Owen to be so weak
In such a need for a burning leaf!

That he would search the filthy ground
To find the longest butt around

And put up to his hungry lips
What other folks have touched with spit!

Consider this poor wretched bloke
And never ever start to smoke

Smoking isn't very smart
It's wise to never ever start.

The Explorers

The camel rolled across the desert
And oh my! It was a windy long desert!
And the way was wild, the
stars were bright;
The dunes were high: Those men were brave.

The small boat shalloped over the waters
And oh my! Those were great high waters!
The journey long, the
stars were bright;
The winds so stormy: Those men were brave!

The
spaceship hurled through outer space
And oh my! What a void that was!
The trip so long: the stars so multicolored bright!
The ship so small! Those men were brave!

THE MAGIC ENCHANTER
A Tribute to Walt Disney

He is the one that
Brought color to dull gray toons
Put
music in their mute lips
Tamed the
forests yet made them wild
Brought
faerie tales to life.
Caught motion and made it stand Silent and still to look upon,
And turned still things
to dancing motion.
He is the one that
Caught
the dance of
flowers
Made it last forever.
Made
Russians out of Thistles
And
Coolies out of Mushrooms
Made
goldfish creatures of Arabia
Gave
merriment to flying Horses.
Showed the
THUNDER OF THE GODS
Caused
Centaurs to fall in love.
Revealed the
wraith and joys of Dragons
and the
love of Mother Deer.
Sent Captain Nemo deep into the Oceans
Sent silver Spaceships into velvet Space.
He made
model T's fly
And gave the Princess to the Prince.
Comforted the seven Dwarfs when
Snowwhite lay
Cold and dead upon the ground.
Brought death to the wicked
witch from

 A FALLING THUNDER CLAP
He let the Eagle soar and traced his flight
He won the wild wild West for us
And swooped
Peter Pan into our Bedrooms
He defeated
Pirates
And raised up
Panther cubs
He gave the righteous every victory
And defeated every
villain.
He made innocence a world of violence
Strengthened our souls with rich sweet food that gave our spirits strength
Made a billion believe in miracles.
Now the King is dead they say
But his works shall live forevermore
Beyond the
tiny sphere of Eart
Ages hence Strange Beings shall say
Walt Disney you are great

PRAYER FOR MY COMPUTER

Oh Lord who made the Whippoorwil

and sprinkled
wild  flowers  on the hil

And
set aflame the starry sky

And painted
Rainbows wild on high

Oh Lord
who stained pink bleeding Mar

Who fashions
Worlds and countless Stars

Who understands the
Mountain Storm

Yet keeps the
tiny Dove from harm,

You who’ve guided countless
ships

and Astronauts on
epic trips

Look now upon our helpless plight

and keep this gadget running right!

Runners

Amino acids churning, swirling
In the
tides of new Earth's seas
Tossed and whirled and changed and swirled
And flung
before the breeze.

And on them shining, glowing, warming
Brilliant disk: the flaming Sun!
God's laughter roars and Life is born!
His work has just begun.

Small plants climbing, crawling, pining
Plowing
strong roots through the sands
Living, dying, growing, trying

To take the
dry thus untamed lands.

Pioneers to an
ungreen world
Cold winds, dry air, millenniums of toil!
Sinking roots into the hard rocks
Splitting
stones to SOIL

We come; hunting, warring, snarling;
Clothes and clubs and coins and spears;
First sense of God and Love Beyond
First agonizing Cosmic FEARS!

Words upon the printed page
Pots and bricks and wheels and FIRE!!
But like the plants the inward longing;
Deep inside, the same
DESIRE!

Starships surging, sailing, soaring;
Silver bits of flotsam flung;
Watched by the Mighty Lord of Hosts;
His work has just begun!

Seeds blown by the Winds of Man;
To multitudes of
suns, such toil!
To sink our roots in
alien sands
To change a zillion
worlds to Soil!
